What the race asks

The Gold Cup is the championship for staying chasers. At 3m 2f 70y it is the longest of the four championship races, and it is run on the New Course — the more galloping of Cheltenham's two main tracks, with a longer run-in and a tricky downhill fence — before the climb to the line. In practical terms a Gold Cup winner needs three things at once: the stamina to see out the trip on ground that is more often soft than not in March, the jumping to survive the downhill fence at racing pace, and the class to quicken off it. Horses that have two of the three tend to fill the places.

History in brief

The Gold Cup was first run as a chase in 1924. Our verified records cover the last ten runnings in detail (below); the fuller roll of honour will be added as each earlier year is verified against source. The recent era belongs to Ireland, and within Ireland to one yard: Closutton.

What the table actually shows

Every figure below is counted from the ten rows above and nothing else. Ten runnings is a small sample; treat these as descriptions of the recent past, not predictions.

Favourites

CountYears
Favourite or joint-favourite won: 5 of 102020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2026
Non-favourite won: 5 of 102017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2025

Working: the SP column marks a favourite in 2020 (9/4), 2022 (3/1), 2023 (7/5), 2024 (10/11) and 2026 (11/4 joint). The other five carry no favourite marker.

The longest-priced winner in the window is Al Boum Photo at 12/1 in 2019; the shortest is Galopin Des Champs at 10/11 in 2024. Only one winner in ten was a double-figure price.

All five Paul Townend wins were on Willie Mullins horses. Five Gold Cups equals the record for both trainer and jockey.

Ireland v Britain

Using the trainer bases recorded in our trainer database: Mullins, de Bromhead, Cromwell and Harrington train in Ireland (9 wins); Tizzard trained in Britain (1 win, Native River 2018). That is 9 of 10 to Ireland.

Repeat winners

Two horses won twice in the window — Al Boum Photo (2019, 2020) and Galopin Des Champs (2023, 2024) — so eight different horses account for ten runnings. Both dual winners were trained by Mullins and ridden by Townend.

What the table cannot tell you

It does not contain ages, official ratings, going or previous-run form, so we do not publish trends on those here. Claims such as "the winner always ran in a particular trial" are common on other sites and are not something this table supports one way or the other.

The 2027 picture as of 14 September 2026

Gaelic Warrior is the defending champion. Third-party reports seen on 21 July 2026 quoted him at about 2/1 favourite for 2027, with Jango Baie (the 2026 runner-up) around 7/1, Final Demand around 16/1, Fact To File around 18/1 and Lulamba, Kitzbuhel (the 2026 Brown Advisory winner) and Inothewayurthinkin (the 2025 winner) around 20/1. Those are indicative ante-post prices reported by third parties; no named bookmaker has been verified, and any prices shown on our race page before a licensed feed is connected are labelled DEMO.

What a 2/1 favourite in September means in practice: an implied chance of about 33% for a race six months away, in a market where a non-runner usually costs you the stake unless you have non-runner no bet. Read ante-post betting explained before acting on any of it.

Before you bet: a checklist

  1. Trip and course: has the horse won, or run well, over three miles or more on a galloping track? The Gold Cup punishes doubtful stayers.
  2. Ground: soft has been the opening-day description in four of the last five Festivals. Check the going in race week, not the price in September.
  3. Market position: half the last ten winners were favourites and none was bigger than 12/1 — a horse at 33/1 is not "due".
  4. Ante-post terms: is non-runner no bet available? If not, is the price big enough to carry the non-runner risk?
  5. Each-way value: a Grade 1 with eight or more runners pays three places at 1/5 odds under standard terms — do the each-way arithmetic before assuming a place return covers you.

Frequently asked questions

3 miles 2 furlongs 70 yards, which is 5,294 metres, run on the New Course on the Friday of the Festival. It is the longest of the four championship races.

Who won the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup?

Gaelic Warrior, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, at 11/4 joint-favourite. He beat Jango Baie by eight lengths.

Who has won the most Gold Cups?

Among the trainers and jockeys in our records, Willie Mullins (trainer) and Paul Townend (jockey) each have five, which equals the record in each case: Al Boum Photo (2019, 2020), Galopin Des Champs (2023, 2024) and Gaelic Warrior (2026).

How often does the favourite win the Gold Cup?

In the last ten runnings (2017–2026), five winners were sent off favourite or joint-favourite: Al Boum Photo (2020), A Plus Tard (2022), Galopin Des Champs (2023 and 2024) and Gaelic Warrior (2026, joint-favourite). Ten races is a small sample.

How does soft ground affect the Gold Cup?

Analysis rather than fact: soft ground makes 3m 2f 70y up Cheltenham Hill a sterner stamina test, which tends to favour proven stayers over speedier types. Our database does not yet hold verified going descriptions for each Gold Cup, so we do not publish a going-based trend.
